Role Summary
The Chief CPA is the top technical authority and performance leader responsible for uniting and modernizing a national accounting firm built through acquisitions. This Director or rising Partner-track role involves defining quality, driving operational efficiency, and leading cultural integration across all acquired practices. You will serve as the crucial bridge between traditional public accounting discipline (Big Four grade) and AI-driven, scalable technology transformation.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical & Quality Leadership: Define, codify, and strictly enforce firmwide technical and quality standards. Oversee peer reviews, complex consultations, and act as the internal “Partner-of-record” for professional credibility.
- Integration & Change Management: Lead the cultural, operational, and system integration of newly acquired firms. Develop playbooks for successful M&A onboarding and leadership transition from founder-led practices to professionally managed practices.
- Performance & Operations Management: Own the performance scorecard for all practices, driving firm-level results based on utilization, margins, client satisfaction, and retention.
- Team Development & Culture: Coach and mentor successor CPAs, setting KPIs and ensuring continuous improvement. Build a strong professional identity and community across all firms during rapid scaling.
- Strategic Partnership: Advise the CEO and CPTO on professional standards, client-service models, and automation deployment, representing the firm to regulators and investors as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Experience: 10–15 years in public accounting, ideally at a Director, Senior Manager, or non-equity Partner level in a regional or large independent firm (Top 100).
- Leadership Level: Clear Partner-track credentials, ready to step into a firm-wide leadership role that involves building and operating, not just inheriting a book of business.
- Credentials: Active CPA license in good standing is required (additional designations welcome).
- Core Expertise: Deep tax and accounting expertise, with proven exposure to multi-office operations or integration environments.
- Change Management: Demonstrated success driving transformation, integrating acquired teams, modernizing workflows, or leading cultural change initiatives.
- Mindset & Style: Entrepreneurial, disciplined, and future-oriented. Acts as a coach, balancing high standards with empathy. Must be familiar with cloud accounting stacks and enthusiastic about AI-powered automation.
